Biology Undergraduate Scholarships and Fellowships

The EWU Biology Department considers undergraduate scholarship awards a valuable and necessary service provided for our students. For full-time Biology majors, we are proud to award several department scholarships.   

  • When applying for any scholarships through Eastern Washington University, you must complete an On-Line Scholarship application. Apply by visiting the EWU Financial Aid and Scholarships (; once on the page click Apply Now.  (To complete the application you must first apply for EWU admission as a net ID is required).
  • The deadline for applying for EWU/Biology Department scholarships is January 31, 2020.   To be considered for Department Awards you will be asked to complete additional information on the Online Scholarship Application.  Please see the full list of Department Scholarships and Criteria

Department of Biology Scholarships Descriptions and Criteria





Dr. Kyoko Awamura Endowed Scholarship Varies Declared biology major during academic year of award with demonstrated financial need.  

Submit an essay that addresses involvement with:

  • Biology Department (research, TA, clubs, etc.)
  • University (clubs, activities) Community (volunteering, applicable groups) Special Accomplishments Awards, Activities
  • Financial Need  
Include two letters of recommendation from persons addressing your scholarship merit (be sure contact information is included).  

Biology Memorial Scholarship Varies Current EWU undergraduate who has completed at least one year of college and will be enrolled at EWU the following school year.

Submit an essay that addresses involvement with:

  • Biology Department (research, TA, clubs, etc.)
  • University (clubs, activities)
  • Community (volunteering, applicable groups)
  • Special Accomplishments, Awards, Activities.  

Include letters of recommendation from two EWU Biology faculty members addressing your scholarship merit.

Cheney Environmental Association Scholarship (formerly Cheney Recycling Center) Varies $1,000-$2,800 Junior or senior Environmental Studies major during the academic year of award (or strong career orientation toward environment / conservation).   Selection based on combination of scholarship, merit, and financial need.

Submit a letter stating:

  • Professional goals,
  • Why you feel qualified for this scholarship
  • Any other relevant information (department, university, and community activities).  

Recipient may be required to volunteer 5 hours per quarter at the EWU Recycling Center during the year of award.

J. Herman and Jean Swartz Biotechnology Undergraduate Scholarship Varies up to $2,800 Full time EWU Biotechnology major or related area during academic year of award.   Selection based on academic accomplishment, financial need, and laboratory research experience.

Submit a letter describing your qualifications for this scholarship.  

Include two letters of recommendation from persons addressing your merit for scholarship (be sure contact information is included).

J. Herman and Jean Swartz Medical Technology Scholarship Varies up to $3,000 Junior or Senior Medical Technology major during the academic year of award.   Minimum 3.3 GPA.

Submit an essay:

  • Identifying the field of biology that most interests you and why
  • Highlighting your involvement in laboratory biology
  • Outlining any special accomplishments/activities you would like considered

Include two letters of recommendation from persons addressing your merit for scholarship; one letter must be from a faculty member from the EWU Department of Biology (be sure contact information is included).

Safari Club $2,500 Junior or Senior standing during the academic year of the award.   Minimum 3.5 GPA.   Biology or Environmental Science major with emphasis on wildlife.   Must be a hunter.

Submit an essay stating:

Professional plans and aspirations

  • Accomplishments
  • Hunting experience
  • Why you feel qualified for this scholarship
  • Any other pertinent information

Include one professional letter of reference (be sure contact information is included).  

Awardee is expected to attend annual banquet.

Department Fellowship- Deadline is Jan. 31, 2020 

Turnbull Laboratory for Ecological Studies (TLES) Research Scholars $3,000 stipend for summer work plus $500 in research support and $500 for travel to present research.   Undergraduate majoring in Biology or Environmental Science with Biology emphasis.  

By 4 pm on Feb. 1st.

EWU Scholarships

Students applying for the EWU Biology Department scholarships outlined above will also be considered for any Eastern Washington University scholarships for which they qualify. These may include the Associated Industries Bright Promise Scholarship, Powell/Schoffen Scholarship and Wittenbach Trust for health-related majors (undergraduate). Contact the EWU Financial Aid and Scholarship Office for information on these and other scholarships related to science and health.
