Asia Studies Certificate

Interest in Asia and Asian Studies has increased dramatically in recent years. For some, Asia represents opportunity for business, trade, and commercial exchange as one of the new and vast marketplaces of the 21st Century. For others, Asia is a place where remarkable expressions of traditional culture such as religion, poetry and art have stayed alive even into the 21st century. Located in the Pacific Northwest, Washington state is a gateway to the East and offers an ideal setting to learn about the Interactions between Asia and the rest of the world. This Asia Studies Certificate offers students the opportunity for a highly specialized and integrative look at trans-regional and international issues related to Asia focusing on the culture, history, politics and languages of the region.

Acceptance to the certificate program requires that the student have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA In all courses at EWU and the approval of the certificate coordinator. In no course required for the certificate can the student receive below a 3.0 and all courses within the certificate must have a 3.3 minimum cumulative GPA.

All required courses for the certificate other than the language requirement must be completed at EWU, transfer credits other than language credits will not be accepted for certificate completion.

Completion of this certificate will also satisfy the minor requirement for students completing majors where a minor is required.

The Asian Studies Certificate is a highly focused program of study that offers both pre- and post-baccalaureate students an opportunity to obtain a specialized and integrative knowledge of trans-regional and international issues specifically related to Asia. The specific objectives of the certificate are, 1) to enable students to combine specialized language and interdisciplinary study of particular areas of Asia with a degree program in any other discipline and 2) to enable established professionals who may hold undergraduate or graduate and professional degrees to enhance their expertise with specialized language and interdisciplinary competence in a critically important region of the world. This certificate focuses on the culture, history, politics and languages of Asia while allowing students to major in any number of diverse fields.

This proposal meets also the goals of the curriculum integration project in CSBS by creating a true certificate that, "complements a student's degree program" and that is "a focused collection of courses" that "focuses on an area of study that...has an applied or practical orientation and is...interdisciplinary in nature." This proposal suggests the creation of a certificate that combines the best of the liberal arts disciplines with the best of career preparation and creates additional opportunities for our best students within the EWU educational environment. It is interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary, involving three distinct departments and five total programs. It provides a real and meaningful benefit to students who complete it. This certificate will also fulfill the minor requirement for students completing a major where a minor is required.
