Large-scale data collection is everywhere.  The pace of data collection is getting faster every day.  Data on just about every aspect of our world is tracked and stored in a database somewhere.  Analytics takes this data and transforms it into a narrative of meaning.  Analytics provides insights into meaningful patterns within recorded data.  Analytics uses data to attempt to answer questions such as:

  • What happened in the past?
  • How did it happen?
  • Why did it happen?
  • What is happening now?
  • What will happen in the future?
  • What is the optimal decision based on what we know
  • What can we expect to happen based on the decision we just made?

What are the degree options?

Currently, Eastern Washington University is offering a Bachelor of Science (BS) and a minor in Data Analytics and a Bachelor of Arts in Business and a minor in Business Analytics.  The Data Analytics sequence is intended to develop the more technically focused analytic skill set, while the Business Analytics sequence is intended to develop the more managerial-focused analytic skill set.

What can I do with my degree?

There is great demand for those with analytics skills.  McKinsey Global Institute projected a shortage in the US by 2018 of "1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions."   A recent search matching just the word "analytics" on found more than 84,000 open positions in the US.   More than 20,000 were in the three west coast states and 3,600 were in Washington State.  Another search found almost 2,000 junior or entry-level positions in the greater New York City area alone posted in a 30 day period!   According to, data scientist is rated the best job in America for 2017, with a median base salary of $110,000.  Analytics ties in with many career labels, which show quite a range of entry level and early career average salaries on
