Music Ensembles

All musical ensembles offered by the EWU Music Departmentensembles, bands, orchestra, choirs, chamber groups, vocal jazz, symphonic band, wind ensemble

Marching Band: The Eagle Marching Band is one of the most exciting and vital organizations on campus. The EWU Marching Band is the focal point of pride and enthusiasm in support of the Eastern Eagle Football NCAA Division 1 FCS Team (2010 Champions!) This highly visible group performs at all home games, selected away games and other events on campus. They have performed around the Northwest, at half-time shows for the Seattle Seahawks NFL team and for teams in the Canadian Football League.

Code Red is Eastern's premier pep band, performing at selected EWU basketball and volleyball games, as well as other campus and community events and recruiting tours.  Code Red is comprised of the most elite and dedicated musicians from the marching band, and therefore all members of Code Red are required to play in marching band.  Membership is by audition.  This band is designed to create intense school spirit, while providing music students with a professional musical experience.  Code Red members receive pay compensation provided by the President's office.

Symphonic Band: The Symphonic Band is a full sized concert band performing once per quarter on campus. The band's full size and balanced instrumentation allow the group to draw its literature from the best of traditional and contemporary repertoire. Rehearsals are limited to two per week.

Wind Ensemble: The Eastern Wind Ensemble is comprised of the most outstanding wind and percussion students on campus.  The group is dedicated to the performance of the finest in wind literature from all musical periods.  Members are selected by audition and the group performs extensively on and off campus.  Over the years, many guest artists have appeared with the group including Allen Vizzutti, Craig Kirchhoff, Eugene Corporan, Robert Ponto, Gunther Schuller, Libby Larsen, Tom Staples, Mike Boschen, and Thomas Lee. They have performed Washington Music Educators Association conferences, All-Northwest M.E.N.C. conferences, Festival Nelson British Columbia, and the Collegiate Wind Festival at California State University, Fresno.  The group can be heard on their two compact discs entitled CELEBRATIONS and DANCES, SONGS & CELEBRATIONS as well as the EWU Music Department's three CD’s, SOUNDSCAPES, PRISMS, and MILLENIUM.

Symphonic Choir
The Eastern Washington University Symphonic Choir is the premier touring concert choir at Eastern. Membership is by audition and students who are selected are expected to commit to a full year of participation. The group performs choral concerts each quarter in the Spokane area, tours every spring, and convention performances. The Symphonic Choir collaborates with the EWU Orchestra to present standard choral/orchestral works as well as repertoire of varying styles by composers new and old. For the past three years, the Symphonic Choir has enjoyed collaborations with the Spokane Symphony (Spokane's Professional Symphony) and Chorale including: Orff's Carmina Burana, Verdi's Requiem, and Opera Choruses & American Music with American baritone, Thomas Hampson.

The 13-member group, Collegians, is dedicated to learning and performing Vocal Jazz. Members are selected by auditions that are open to all enrolled EWU students. Members of Collegians must be willing to commit to a full year of membership. Because of the nature of this ensemble, run-out concerts are scheduled each quarter, and the members of this ensemble must have flexible schedules to allow them to perform often. Student are required to provide their own formal wear/concert attire. Performances include the quarterly choral concerts on campus, educational outreach concerts, entertainment/banquet performances, touring, and convention performances.

Concert Choir
Concert Choir is an unauditioned concert choir at Eastern. Membership is open to all EWU students and those who sign up for the class are expected to commit to full participation that quarter. The group performs choral concerts at least once a quarter with the Symphonic Choir.

Vocal Jazz II
Vocal Jazz II is an unauditioned jazz choir at Eastern dedicated to learning and performing Vocal Jazz. Membership is open to all EWU students and those who sign up for the class are expected to commit to full participation that quarter. The group performs at jazz concerts and solo nights.

EWU Symphony Orchestra: The EWU Symphony Orchestra is open to both music majors and qualified non-majors.  The orchestra meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (Strings only) from 1:00-2:30 .  For students with class conflicts, there is some flexibility with regard to rehearsal attendance.  The mission of the EWU Symphony Orchestra is to learn and perform a wide variety of classical music from the vast symphonic repertoire.  This includes music for strings, full orchestra, and orchestra/chorus.  In addition to studying music of the great western tradition, the EWU Symphony also performs contemporary repertoire and pop/world music. The members and director of the orchestra share the same goal in rehearsal and performance: to achieve the highest possible degree of learning, performance and enjoyment.  Students will experience new repertoire, improve their musicianship, and enhance their ensemble skills.  Alumni of the EWU Orchestra are prominent teachers and performers throughout Northwest.  Please check out the EWU Orchestra page on Facebook!

Large Ensembles: The EWU Concert Jazz Orchestra has performed throughout the United States and Canada, playing classic big band literature as well as original compositions and arrangements by EWU students, EWU faculty, and some of the most fresh and well-known writers in the business. The CJO has recently performed at NAfME conferences and concert halls in San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver BC. In addition, the CJO was invited to perform at the Next Gen Jazz Festival in Monterey, CA. The Large Ensemble Program boasts two more large instrumental jazz ensembles: the Repertory Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Lab Ensemble. These groups perform with visiting guest artists at EWU and throughout the Northwest.

Vocal Jazz Ensembles:  The EWU Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Collegians have performed at conferences and in concert halls and festivals throughout the United States and abroad. Most recently, the Collegians traveled to Limerick, Ireland. These ensembles have the opportunity to sing classic and contemporary vocal jazz literature by some of the finest composers and arrangers in the nation. Ranging from 8 to 16 voices, these vocal jazz groups provide our students with the skills and tools necessary to be successful choral teachers.

Jazz Small Group Program: The EWU combo program includes around six combos during any given quarter. These small jazz groups are coached by the EWU jazz faculty and regularly perform in concert around the region. Through weekly jazz forums and coaching sessions, the Small Group Program provides outstanding venues for students to gain valuable experiences. These groups often perform original arrangements and compositions by members of the ensembles.

Chamber Groups

Chamber Ensembles: Students at EWU are encouraged to explore and perform a wide variety of chamber music, ranging from classical masterpieces to contemporary compositions.  Chamber groups regularly consist of string quartets, strings with piano, and strings with winds. Weekly regular coaching times are held.  Other times are also available for group rehearsal and coachings.   Chamber music performances are regularly presented on EWU recitals and convocations.  EWU chamber groups also perform off campus for events such as Musicfest Northwest, house concerts and FOX Theater performances prior to Spokane Symphony Orchestra concerts.

Percussion Ensemble: The percussion program at Eastern Washington University offers comprehensive instruction in classical/western percussion instruments and literature for keyboard percussion instruments (marimba, vibraphone, etc.), snare drum, timpani, and auxiliary percussion. The classical focus is on ensemble performance, solo literature, and orchestral excerpts. The percussion ensembles perform a diverse repertoire ranging from jazz and ethnic influenced pieces to more traditional classical compositions.
