Eastern's Jazz Program is one of the most exciting and progressive in the Northwest!

Large Ensembles The EWU Concert Jazz Orchestra has performed throughout the United States and Canada, playing classic big band literature as well as original compositions and arrangements by EWU students, EWU faculty, and some of the most fresh and well-known writers in the business. The CJO has recently performed at NAfME conferences and concert halls in San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver BC. In addition, the CJO was invited to perform at the Next Gen Jazz Festival in Monterey, CA. The Large Ensemble Program boasts two more large instrumental jazz ensembles: the Repertory Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Lab Ensemble. These groups perform with visiting guest artists at EWU and throughout the Northwest.

Vocal Jazz Ensembles  The EWU Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Collegians have performed at conferences and in concert halls and festivals throughout the United States and abroad. Most recently, the Collegians traveled to Estonia and Limerick, Ireland. These ensembles have the opportunity to sing classic and contemporary vocal jazz literature by some of the finest composers and arrangers in the nation. Ranging from 8 to 16 voices, these vocal jazz groups provide our students with the skills and tools necessary to be successful choral teachers.

Jazz Small Group Program The EWU combo program includes around six combos during any given quarter. These small jazz groups are coached by the EWU jazz faculty and regularly perform in concert around the region. Through weekly jazz forums and coaching sessions, the Small Group Program provides outstanding venues for students to gain valuable experiences. These groups often perform original arrangements and compositions by members of the ensembles.

Faculty The goal of the department is to provide students with musical instruction and experience of the highest possible quality. Our outstanding faculty members actively perform, compose, and present research locally, nationally, and internationally, giving students a first-hand look into the lives current artist/scholars. Our faculty members are dedicated to inspiring and mentoring music leaders for the next generation.

Students also perform for a jury of faculty members on materials provided through the curriculum. See the EWU catalog for more details.
