A Vibrant Musical Community!

The Spokane region offers the best of both worlds. The small town atmosphere of Cheney is not only beautiful and safe, it's the kind of place where everybody knows your name. Only 20 minutes away, the Spokane metropolitan area has hundreds of venues to play, practice, work and teach.

Collaborate with exceptional musicians and teachers in small classes. Make connections and participate in a variety of events and recitals. Our faculty are part of the region's dynamic musical community, including the Spokane Symphony and its Music Innovates Program, Northwest Opera, the Northwest Bach Festival, and the Spokane Jazz Orchestra, "the longest, continuously performing, community supported jazz orchestra in the United States." Four degrees with a total of eight options are offered for students who wish to become teachers, performers, composers, conductors, theorists or scholars at the undergraduate level. Graduate degrees in music and a music minor are also available.

The mission of the EWU Department of Music is 1) to provide the highest quality education for the music major embarking on a career as a performer, composer, educator or scholar; and 2) to educate the non-major about music within a liberal arts tradition as a part of human culture and experience. The Music Department curriculum is designed to engage students of all cultural backgrounds. In order to enrich the community as a whole, the department offers many musical performances for regional audiences and provides educational/performance opportunities for the general public.  Music Department is an EWU Accredited Program and its faculty members combine dedicated teaching with artistic and scholarly excellence. They have succeeded in creating a superior student-centered learning environment. The Music Department is committed to artistic excellence, scholarly achievement, critical thought and clear expression. Our goal is to provide students with musical instruction and experience of the highest possible quality. Our belief is that the study of music significantly enables students to become informed, responsible and appreciative members of a democratic society-which is a professed goal of Eastern. We recognize differing needs of those for whom music is to become a profession and those for whom it will be an avocation or a listener's art.

What are the degree options?

  • Music Minor:
Intended for students who need or would like to earn a music minor in addition to an undergraduate degree outside of music. For example, students could major in psychology with minor in music.

Graduate Degrees:

  • Master of Music (MM):
Areas of Concentration: Music Education (with summer and on-line options), Performance (Instrumental/Vocal), Composition, Jazz, and Liberal Arts.

What can I do with my degree?

With a music degree, you may seek employment in music education, music businesses and performing groups--bands, symphonies, jazz, popular music--as well as individual performance careers. The placement record of graduates of the Department of Music is excellent.
