Our program provides a comprehensive array of services designed to facilitate your graduation and ultimate enrollment in doctoral programs. Our program services include:

  • Research Opportunities. Participants who have completed their sophomore year of college conduct research under the guidance of a Faculty Mentor. Quality research projects provide a realistic picture of what constitutes graduate school level work, while also preparing students for the scholarly doctoral school climate.
  • Mentoring. Each student is matched with a Faculty Mentor who provides individual guidance and mentoring regarding the graduate school application process and the completion of undergraduate research projects. Mentors serve as role models and are an essential resource for their McNair Scholar.
  • Graduate School Seminar. Students attend a weekly graduate school seminar that focuses on specific topics designed to demystify the graduate school application process, including: how to identify the graduate programs that "fit" their needs and interests, preparation for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), and how to excel in graduate school.
  • Research Theory Course. Students either enroll in a Research Methodology course during the spring semester or attend a research methodology workshop. The course/workshop will enable students to augment their academic experience, as they will experience research from both a "hands-on" and a theoretical perspective.
  • Graduate School Visitation Program. Students have the opportunity to travel to various graduate schools throughout the country to examine institutions and departments as possible graduate school destinations.
  • Summer Internships. Students participate in a 10-week summer program during which they continue individual research projects, attend a graduate school seminar, and participate in a graduate school visitation program. In addition, scholars take GRE prep courses, and participate in weekly reading groups about issues such as rhetoric, identity, and education. All scholars are paid a stipend plus room and board.
  • Tutoring and Academic Counseling. Academic tutoring is available to enable each student to successfully complete all of his or her undergraduate courses. Individual academic counseling from both the Program Coordinator and a Faculty Mentor enables students to maximize their undergraduate program and to prepare for graduate study.
  • Assistance in Securing Financial Aid. Students receive support and guidance in securing undergraduate and graduate financial aid.
  • McNair Stipend. Students who conduct research will receive a competitive stipend. Room and board during the summer program are also provided.
  • Research Presentations. Students culminate their McNair experience by presenting their research at the McNair Summer Program Research Conference. In addition, students have the opportunity to travel to additional McNair conferences nationwide and to network with graduate school representatives, as well as McNair scholars from across the country.
