Dear readers and writers,
Eudora Welty once said about her love for books:
| “I cannot remember a time when I was not in love with them—with the books themselves, cover and binding and the paper they were printed on, with their smell and their weight and with their possession in my arms, captured and carried off to myself.” |
While there is an increase in all forms of writing—whether books, articles, blogs or emails—there is also a growing interest in the art and craft of writing. The stimulating dialogue between two minds that enlightens readers and activates writers is central to the creative works and intellectual scholarship of Eastern Washington University Press. This dialogue is extended to the public through our published books and by the authors and events of the Get Lit! Festival organized by the Press each spring in Spokane and Cheney, Washington.
The Get Lit! Festival, now celebrating its tenth year, has an impressive history of bringing powerful writers such as Salman Rushdie, David Sedaris, and Kurt Vonnegut to Spokane. Eastern Washington University Press is the largest university press between the Cascades and the Great Plains, and is expanding to meet the needs of this rapidly growing part of the country. The Press, through its books and festival, is strengthening the role of Eastern Washington University and Spokane in the education and arts of the region.
We urge your support for this dialogue. At a time when the country is realizing that engaged reading and effective writing are necessary parts of every person’s education, your help is crucial to make certain that these skills are at the center of that education. Becoming a member of the Northwest Friends of Literature not only supports these essential needs, but also involves you as a participant in a vibrant and stimulating community of readers and writers.
